A classic mac and cheese recipe with a golden, crispy topping.
Ingredients
- 1 pound elbow macaroni
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 cups milk
- 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cook the macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese, salt, and pepper until the cheese is melted.
- Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to combine.
- Pour the mac and cheese into a greased baking dish.
- Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the mac and cheese is bubbly.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder or onion powder to the cheese sauce.
- You can use different types of cheese, such as Gruyère or Monterey Jack.
- If you want a spicier mac and cheese, add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
