Ingredients
- 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 2 lbs)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Arrange half of the potato slices in the prepared baking dish.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.

- Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, nutmeg, and half of the cheddar and Gruyere cheeses until melted and smooth.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes in the baking dish.
- Layer the remaining potato slices on top.
- Pour the remaining cheese sauce over the potatoes.
- Sprinkle the remaining cheddar and Gruyere cheeses over the top.
- Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can use a combination of cheeses like Monterey Jack, Swiss, or Parmesan.
- If you prefer a thinner sauce, add a little more milk.
