Description

A classic comfort food dish featuring thinly sliced potatoes baked in a rich, creamy cheese sauce.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 2 lbs)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange half of the potato slices in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  4. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, nutmeg, and half of the cheddar and Gruyere cheeses until melted and smooth.
  6. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes in the baking dish.
  7. Layer the remaining potato slices on top.
  8. Pour the remaining cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  9. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar and Gruyere cheeses over the top.
  10. Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  11. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use a combination of cheeses like Monterey Jack, Swiss, or Parmesan.
  • If you prefer a thinner sauce, add a little more milk.
  • Ensure your potatoes are sliced uniformly for even cooking.
