Description

A warm, spiced wine perfect for cold weather.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine
  • 1/2 cup brandy or cognac (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sugar, or to taste
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star anise
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom pods, lightly crushed
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Instructions

  1. Combine red wine, brandy (if using), sugar, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cardamom, and ginger in a large pot.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it is hot but not boiling. Stir occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
  3. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer gently for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Do not boil.
  4. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  5. Strain the mulled wine to remove the spices and orange slices.
  6. Serve hot in mugs, garnished with fresh orange slices or cinnamon sticks if desired.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute red grape juice for the wine and omit the brandy.
  • You can add raisins or almonds to the serving mugs for extra texture.
  • Adjust spices to your preference.
