Description
Make these beautiful swirl cookies for a romantic Valentine’s Day treat.
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Red gel food coloring
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the vanilla and almond extracts.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the dough in half.
- Add red food coloring to one half and mix until the color is uniform.
- Wrap each dough separately in plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out each dough to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Place one color on top of the other.
- Roll the dough up tightly like a log.
- Wrap the log in plastic wrap and chill for 15 minutes.
- Slice the log into 1/4-inch thick cookies.
- Place cookies on prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For a more intense red color, add more food coloring.
- You can add sprinkles before baking for extra decoration.
