Description

This cheap chicken thigh, rice and carrot dog topper uses simple grocery-store ingredients to add extra flavor and variety to your dog’s regular food. Chicken thighs help keep the recipe affordable, while rice and carrots stretch a small amount of meat into several easy portions.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 cup cooked plain white rice
  • 1/2 cup carrots, finely diced
  • 1/2 to 1 cup water as needed

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Chicken

Place the chicken thighs in a saucepan and cover them with water.

Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and gently cook the chicken until it is completely cooked through.

Don’t season it.

Once the chicken has cooled enough to handle, shred it into small pieces.

If you’re using bone-in thighs because they were cheaper at the grocery store, make absolutely sure every bone and bone fragment is removed before the chicken goes into your dog’s food.

Never include cooked chicken bones.

Step 2: Cook the Rice

Prepare plain white rice using only rice and water.

You can cook it specifically for your dog or use leftover rice from your own kitchen, provided the rice doesn’t contain salt, butter, garlic, onion, sauces, or other seasonings.

Let the rice become soft rather than leaving it firm.

Step 3: Soften the Carrots

Cut the carrots into small pieces and boil or steam them until tender.

I prefer small soft pieces because they mix easily through the rice and chicken.

For a small dog, you can chop or mash them even more finely.

Step 4: Mix Everything Together

Add the cooked rice, shredded chicken, and softened carrots to a bowl.

Mix everything well.

Add a little warm water if the mixture seems too dry. The finished cheap chicken dog food topper should be soft and slightly moist without becoming watery.

Allow it to cool completely before serving.
